Dr Shigo

It would seem fitting to start our blog with an introduction to Dr Alex Shigo, considered to be the father of modern arboriculture. Thanks to his dedicated research, as well as his love of trees in general, our understanding of tree biology and best pruning practices has been forever changed for the better. Most commonly associated with his explanation of CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees), his work helped to raise the standard of tree care throughout the world. Improper practices such as tree topping (an educated and careful height reduction pruning or beginning a pollard are ultimately quite different approaches), filling cavities with tar/ concrete (which he discovered only encouraged further decay and decline in trees), among other outdated practices, have slowly but surely been phased out across the industry. As he was known to say, “Touch trees!”. Thank you Dr Shigo!
